Kingdom: Exile (1 Samuel 27)

Jan 25, 2026    Jeremy Erb

In this exploration of 1 Samuel 27, we encounter David at his most vulnerable—not as the giant-slayer or faith-filled hero, but as a man consumed by fear and doubt. After God miraculously delivers him yet again from Saul's hand, David convinces himself that he'll eventually perish and makes the astonishing decision to flee to Philistine territory—the very land of his enemies, including Goliath's homeland. This chapter doesn't shy away from showing us David's failures: his deception, his lies to King Achish, and his brutal raids to cover up those lies. Yet within this narrative of human weakness lies a profound spiritual truth—even when we fail, even when we choose our own path over God's wisdom, His sovereignty continues to work. The message challenges us to examine those moments when we've let fear dictate our decisions, when we've trusted our own understanding rather than God's promises. It reminds us that the path that seems right to us often leads to compromise and deeper entanglement, while God's way—though it may not make sense—leads to life. Most beautifully, David's failure points us to Jesus, the true King who never compromised, never deceived, and walked perfectly in righteousness even unto death—and through that obedience, conquered death itself.
