Jealousy (1 Samuel 18)

Sep 28, 2025    Jeremy Erb

In this exploration of 1 Samuel 18, we're invited to witness the stark contrast between David's faithfulness and Saul's jealousy. As David rises in favor with both God and the people, Saul's envy consumes him, leading to increasingly dangerous attempts on David's life. This story reminds us that sometimes doing what's right doesn't guarantee an easy path. In fact, our success and faithfulness can provoke opposition from unexpected places. Yet, like David, we're called to remain steadfast, trusting in God's plan even when others plot against us. The beautiful friendship between David and Jonathan also stands out, showing us what selfless love looks like in the face of potential rivalry. This narrative challenges us to examine our own hearts: Do we rejoice in others' God-given success, or do we let envy take root? Are we willing to stand firm in our faith, even when it makes us a target? As we reflect on this, we're reminded that our ultimate example is Jesus, who faced perfect obedience with undeserved hatred, yet overcame for our sake.
