Faith (1 Samuel 14:1-23)

May 25, 2025    Jeremy Erb

In this exploration of 1 Samuel 14:1-23, we're invited to examine the stark contrast between fear and faith through the actions of Jonathan and Saul. While Saul cowers in fear, paralyzed by circumstances, Jonathan steps out in courageous faith, believing that God can do the impossible. This story challenges us to consider: Are we sitting in caves of fear or stepping out in faith? Jonathan's declaration, 'Perhaps the Lord will act for us,' embodies the essence of faith – not certainty, but confident trust in God's character and promises. We're reminded that faith isn't passive; it's active. It's not about waiting for perfect conditions, but about taking steps forward, trusting that God will meet us there. This message encourages us to identify the 'caves' in our own lives where we might be hiding, and inspires us to step out, even when the path isn't clear. As we reflect on Jonathan's example, we're challenged to live with a faith that's contagious, communal, and courageously active in the face of seemingly impossible odds.
